Movement Recognition Using Internal Sensors of a Smartphone-based HMD

It is difficult to use the touchscreen of a smartphone which is enclosed in the Virtual Reality (VR) headset of a smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD). In this work, we suggest a new interaction method of smartphone-based HMDs, linking various movements, such as jumping and turning, with the manipulations of a VR environment. We used the accelerometer and the gyroscope of a smartphone for detection and classification of the movements. In case of generating a support vector machine (SVM) classifier of movements for each user, the average movement recognition accuracy for 16 movements was 92.03%.
